Cerebral Palsy in Babies: Causes, Symptoms, and Treatment

Cerebral palsy (CP) is a group of neurological disorders that affect a person's ability to control body movements and position. This condition generally occurs in infants and children due to damage or interference with the developing brain.

Although this condition cannot be completely cured, proper care and support given early on can help babies with cerebral palsy reach their full potential. This article will discuss the causes, symptoms, and management of cerebral palsy in infants.

What Causes Cerebral Palsy in Babies?

Cerebral palsy in infants is caused by various factors that cause interference or damage to the growing brain. Some of the trigger factors for cerebral palsy include:

1. Ischemia or Asphyxia
Ischemia is a condition when the supply of oxygen-rich blood to the brain is disrupted, so that brain cells experience a lack of oxygen. Asphyxia, on the other hand, is a condition when a baby has difficulty breathing or no breath at all during a critical period during the birth process. Severe ischemia or asphyxia can cause permanent damage to the baby's brain because brain cells are very sensitive to a lack of oxygen.

2. Infection in the Mother During Pregnancy
Some infections suffered by the mother during pregnancy can cause cerebral palsy in the baby. Infections such as rubella (German measles), cytomegalovirus (CMV), and toxoplasmosis can cross the placenta and cause damage to the nervous system of the developing fetus.

3. Head Injury
Head injuries that occur during birth or in the first 2 years of a baby's life can also be a cause of cerebral palsy. This head injury can occur due to a fall, hard impact, or other accident that causes trauma to the baby's developing brain.

4. Brain Bleeding
Brain hemorrhages in babies can occur during birth or after. This can occur due to lack of oxygen or high pressure during the birth process. This brain hemorrhage can damage important parts of the brain that are responsible for movement control, balance, and coordination of the body.

5. Genetic and Metabolic Disorders
Some cases of cerebral palsy can be caused by genetic disorders or metabolic disorders that interfere with the baby's brain development. Genetic disorders such as Down syndrome or metabolic disorders such as phenylketonuria (PKU) can affect brain development and cause cerebral palsy.

6. Postnatal Infections
Cerebral palsy It can also be caused by an infection that occurs after birth, such as meningitis or encephalitis. This infection can cause inflammation in the brain and cause permanent damage to brain tissue.

7. Malformations of the Brain
Damage or malformations in certain parts of the brain can also cause cerebral palsy. For example, malformations in the cerebellum can interfere with body balance and coordination.

It is important to remember that the causes of cerebral palsy in infants can be very complex and are often difficult to identify with certainty. Some cases may have more than one causative factor. In addition, some infants with cerebral palsy may have no clear risk factors or no specific cause can be identified (idiopathic).

Symptoms that Appear in Babies with Cerebral Palsy

These symptoms usually appear early in a baby's life or within the first 2 years. Symptoms of cerebral palsy in infants include:

  1. Movement disorders: Babies may have stiff or weak body movements. They may have difficulty moving their arms, legs, or whole body.
  2. Impaired posture: Babies with cerebral palsy can have unstable postures and find it difficult to maintain balance.
  3. Abnormal reflexes: Babies may have abnormal reflexes, for example, a Moro reflex that doesn't go away.
  4. Difficulty sucking or swallowing: Some babies with cerebral palsy can have difficulty breastfeeding or eating because of problems coordinating the jaw and tongue muscles.
  5. Speech difficulties: In later stages of development, babies may have difficulty speaking or producing sounds clearly.

If parents or nurses suspect that there are symptoms of cerebral palsy in babies, immediately take them to the doctor or pediatric therapist to be examined and diagnosed appropriately. The sooner it is diagnosed, the sooner treatment and help can begin so that the baby can develop as well as possible.

Required Care

Treatment for babies who have cerebral palsy is to use medical approaches and therapies to help them develop and live better lives. There are several types of treatment that can be given, namely:

  1. Physical Therapy
Physical therapy is very important to help improve muscle strength, coordination of movements, and balance of the baby's body.
  1. Occupational Therapy
This therapy helps babies to do daily activities such as eating, dressing, and playing better.
  1. Speech Therapy
Speech therapy helps babies to speak and communicate better.
  1. Drugs
In some cases, the doctor may give certain drugs to help control the symptoms of cerebral palsy, such as drugs to relax muscles or prevent seizures.
  1. Surgical Procedure
In more severe cases, surgery may be needed to reduce muscle stiffness or correct bone deformities. This operation aims to make the baby more comfortable and able to move better.

Closing

However, besides treatment, it is also important for parents to prepare adequate financial protection for their child's future. Health insurance is very important for children with cerebral palsy. The cost of intensive medical care and therapy can be a heavy financial burden on families.

With health insurance from BNI LIFE, parents don't have to worry about the cost of caring for their children. BNI LIFE is one of the recommendations the best insurance in Indonesia which helps protect the health and finances of the family. Good health protection is an important investment for our children's future, ensuring they receive optimal care and the opportunity to develop and live a better life.
