Getting to Know the Dark Triad, the Hidden Dark Side of Personality. What is the dark triad? Quoting from Cleveland Clinic, the dark triad is a psychological personality theory developed by Delroy L. Paulhus and Kevin M. Williams in 2002.
This term encompasses three different negative personality traits, but they can overlap in a person, including:
1. Narcissism
As quoted from the Verywell Mind website, narcissism is a condition where a person has an excessive focus on themselves to the point of neglecting the needs of others. People with this trait often feel superior, more important, and entitled to special attention.
2. Subclinical Psychopathy
Subclinical psychopathy describes individuals who have antisocial traits.
They tend to lack guilt, have minimal empathy, and find it difficult to control impulses.
3. Machiavellianism
Machiavellianism refers to a person's tendency to manipulate others to achieve personal goals. This term originates from the Italian political thinker, Niccolò Machiavelli, who is known for the idea that the ends justify the means.
People with dark triad tendencies often have good social skills, making them difficult to recognize at first. They can appear confident, attractive, even charismatic, which makes it easy for others to trust them.
In psychological research, the identification of this trait is usually done thru personality tests such as the Big Five Personality Traits. However, in everyday life, the signs often only become apparent after prolonged interaction.
