Here are 3 things you need to remember when teaching toilet training to children:
1. Gradually introduce toilet training
Start talking about this exercise around your child's first birthday to arouse their interest. Keep a few children's books on toilet training to read with the child. Discuss in conversation such as 'I have to pee, I'm going to the toilet.' That way, it can increase their awareness of defecating and urinating where they are comfortable.
2. Create a training schedule
The key is to have time throughout the day when you can train them. If necessary, make a special toilet training schedule that you can practice everyday.
Consider asking your child to sit on the toilet every two hours, whether or not they have to go, including early in the morning, before leaving the house, and before napping and at night.
Tell them to take off their pants first, then sit on the toilet for a few minutes if they have to defecate. Read a book or play with questions so they don't get bored of waiting.
3. Prepare for failure
When you train your child to toilet training, failure becomes part of the process. So, you must be prepared that there are failures in sight to be faced. Never punish your little one for wetting their pants or getting their pants dirty. Remember, they are just learning and they can't help it.
